Telegraph defines online bingo for middle classes

September 2nd, 2008 by admin

There was an article in the Sunday Telegraph recently with a title “Online bingo is a mecca for the middle classes” and I for one found it quite a strange title; online bingo isn’t restricted to defined classes but a game that all classes can participate in surely? Although having said that in my time as an online bingo player I’ve yet to meet someone in a bingo chat room from the upper class.

However how many times have you sat in an online bingo chat room and seen a conversation like this:-

Player A: Hi room, I’m working class
Player B: Well hello player A. I’m lower middle class
Player C: Oh dear, one is rather disappointed in the riff raff frequenting this bingo chat room, I myself am upper class.

There were quite a few things in the Telegraph article by Rowena Mason that got my back up a little bit; the class statement being the first. The second was the insinuation that online bingo players hide their gaming from family and friends. Having said that I have often seen statements by bingo players where they have told their partners that the AquaPay appearing on their bank statements are actually water bills! AquaPay is the payment processing department for the 888 Holdings online bingo sites as well as some others but in all honesty this is a tongue in cheek statement by bingo players. Anyone with half a brain will know that their partners might query why there are 10 separate payments all of £10 for their water bill!

I don’t doubt for one minute that some players do have an issue with the amount of time and money they spend on online bingo but on the whole this I imagine to be a fairly small percentage of online bingo players. Players with a potential gambling problem are in position where they can self exclude themselves from any online bingo site; online bingo has a duty of care to all players.
